Mad rush for Apple’s iPhone 4

The eagerly-anticipated Apple iPhone 4 finally went on sale in Singapore at the stroke of midnight on Friday.

Customers keen to be the first owners of the latest range of iPhones queued up from as early as 630pm.

“I was surprised that when I came at 630pm, there was already a queue,” said financial consultant Marvin Wee, 27, who joined M1′s queue at Paragon.

The popular smartphone was released concurrently by all three local telcos at different locations.

SingTel’s iPhone 4s were available at a special launch event at Marina Bay Sands, while M1 and StarHub had their launches at Paragon and Plaza Singapura respectively.

The M1 queue at Paragon was by far the longest as it snaked around the basement of the shopping mall, while customers at Starhub’s Plaza Singapura had to register first before joining the queue.

The new iPhone comes packed with brand new features, like a new 5-megapixel camera and the ability to take high-definition videos. The screen also boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution phone screen in the market today.

Undergrad Angeline Lee, 21, who was in the M1 queue, said: “My current iPhone 3G is pretty old and the camera is quite lousy, so this is definitely a worthwhile upgrade for me as I use my phone camera quite a lot.”

Freelance artist Brandon Goh, 24, agrees with her: “The iPhone 4 will be useful for me as I will be able to take HD (high-definition) videos with my phone and even be able to edit them on the go with the iMovie app.”

But aren’t local consumers bothered by the smartphone’s well-publicised antenna issues?

Teacher Lee Jialing, 28, is not at all bothered: “I don’t think the iPhone 4 is going to be in as bad a condition as my old iPhone 3G, which has a permanent reception problem. Whereas for the iPhone 4, I can still be careful not to allow my hand to block the reception points on the antenna when I use it.”

The new iPhone 4 comes in the 16GB and 32GB versions, which are listed as S$888 and S$1,048 respectively on the Apple website.

All three telcos are offering the basic 16GB model for between $480 to $500 with a monthly fee of just under $40.

Strange human behaviour. For the sake of getting their hands on the latest in-thing and overhype items, they do anything… the previous ip 3G already not as good in phone performance but yet, these ip 4 can still create such a hip culture. Strange.

  23. terencetan1978 on July 30, 2010 at 11:55 am

For those who are not sure, the version filmware that release 4.0.1 in fact solve most of the issue for the Iphone 4 but if any 3GS user go and update to that, it is a reverse that the problems become on the 3GS. best part is even you complaint to Apple, they will claims they will look into it with nothing done. Now they only concentrating on how to sell more Iphone 4.

Those who queue up are mostly those electronic fan i would say and they are just wanting to be the 1st to get what is in the market and not that they have extra to spend on in correcting the comment above.
most of them are students and they are buying it for the sake of buying showing they have the latest tread in their pockets that is all.

In fact after doing so many trial, in terms of net work, reception and function, apple only have the function that catch people to buy but if you try wack the machine 32 gb with 28 gb of photos or songs, that is where you will see the laggy iphone crying for help. which i had done before.
your system will be running super slow once you wack it with tons of things. and with multi tasking, worst cause alot of application is not fully closed and is running in back ground, more lag.

  24. terencetan1978 on July 30, 2010 at 11:57 am

forget to add to it, it i take the iphone 4 is $0 for renew contract only i also never go queue cause Apple will have another replacement some where next year mid again.

No need for opinions? this is addiction! Guys hold on to yourselves, if upgrading is your type, better think twice. Anyways, there would still be more happy people who will enjoy the old tech you’ll be leaving behind. But sadly apple is just populating sg with some kind of crippled phone. Bumpers anyone?

  33. usernameused on July 30, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Whoa! truly high end phone lah! Just dont blame anyone, if you start experiencing problems. Else you like to have SG be in the news, like US users. You know it is broken (so much for jail break :X ), why complain?

  34. vereneonn on July 30, 2010 at 2:51 pm

It’s better to get it later, i believe the price will go down.
Time is so precious, why spend it on hours-queing? The iPhone is not free afterall.

  35. vereneonn on July 30, 2010 at 2:59 pm

It’ll be nice to see such long queues when comes to donating blood..

  36. aaccess on July 30, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Smart consumers will watch & see before they spend on their hard earn money on a phone that has news reporting problems & defect. Unless it is proven after a while that this IPHONE4 got no issue, then we can safely buy this phone with no worries & I believe for phone, the price will drop after a while.

Those people who queue overnight for this 1st batch of Iphone4 are really kaisu, unless you have all the time & extra money, if not, you maybe are really asking for trouble.

  37. gryvamp on July 30, 2010 at 3:47 pm

my friend went down to Singtel to Q but in the end did not buy the iP4 cos on top of the phone price (less than $300) he still have to pay a penatly of $300 for the upgrade from iP3gs, better checked properly b4 upgraded cos there are some hidden cross you won’t know. (waste of time to Q)

  38. rubytan on July 30, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Aiyoh ! So many “how lian” people !

  41. asuhaimi2003 on July 30, 2010 at 4:45 pm

  42. specialopssniper on July 30, 2010 at 6:40 pm

they have nothing else to do. so queing is like a past time for them.
I wonder what’s going on in their mind……. Materialism…..it is destroying us.

  43. onggc on July 30, 2010 at 8:17 pm

What a joke, can see all the 3 Telco have no confidence to bring in iphone 4.

  44. facemybook on July 30, 2010 at 9:38 pm

L0sers!. and the pr0poganda on local radio’s interviewing those in the Q… Off Course they will answer its a great phone and no issue at all. Why didnt the interview any other passerby?. If im already eating a $200 drumstick and u ask me i will say yes its a good piece of chicken. but ask the person not eating beside me and he/she will answer im stupid coz you can buy chickens for $20 a kg and the idiot is paying $200 for a drumstick.

  45. sashylimited on July 30, 2010 at 11:16 pm

well, its not free..why queue. you are the first to get it, but next day, others are having it too….meaningless.

publicity for the manufacturer and the telcos…..maybe 80% are their people lor…..

  46. smlcute on July 31, 2010 at 12:06 am
