There should be no retirement age for S’pore: MM Lee
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew says there should be no retirement age for workers in Singapore.
He made the suggestion on Wednesday at a dialogue session in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) attended by over 900 senior managers, government officials and unionists.
According to a Channel NewsAsia report, he said: “You work as long as you can work and you will be healthier and happier for it. If you ask me to stop working all of a sudden, I think I’ll just shrivel up, face the wall and just that.”
Responding to a question on challenges Singapore may face with an aging population, MM Lee said old people should be more productive.
The 86-year-old added that at his age, he may have aches and pains but he can keep going.
From 2012, workers who hit the retirement age of 62 in Singapore will be offered re-employment by their employers.
MM Lee said older workers will need to come to terms with the psychological switch – that is, working for less pay and very likely for a younger boss.
Another hot topic discussed at the dialogue was foreign talent. MM Lee said foreign talents come to Singapore because of the opportunities it offers.
He said that their numbers will add to a growing “intellectual class”.
MM Lee added: “We are going to have an intellectual class, about maybe three times as big as what you have now and that will give us the dynamism, the powerful engine to carry us forward faster.”

Pls refrain from destroying your legend. I respect and admire for what you had achieve and done. But the recent comments you made reflect not even a tenth of what you were 50 years ago.

There are many things to do after retirement. You can join the red cross, help the aged and handicapped. so much ways you can improve the society. Teaching is one of the best but not very possible in sg due the job requirement.
The present society with both parents working, it is much better for the old to help educate the young rather than maid from overseas with different culture. So much yet so little time.

Who would not want to be working healthily, happily as long as one’s body is able ?
Who would not wish to keep having the strength of a healthy young person?
Who would not want to work harder now than to suffer when one gets older?
Who would not want to work harder now and retire earlier and have the choice to stop working rather than facing unemployment.
Who would not want to be someone ” talk cock sing song “work when one reaches 90?
Let’s think far ahead man .
Get your FACTS right !!

Not many of us get paid $3m to talk only. For the matter, not many of us get a job that pay us to only talk. Try telling a labourer to work until he is 86. There is this feeling recently that our leaders are becoming detached from reality and are losing sight of the man on the street.

As a worker above the age of 60 I welcome the suggestion of having no limit on retirement age but however there are issues that I could see immediately such as medical cost, insurance and CPF contribution etc. Unless guidelines and legislation spelled out effectively I believe it is unlikely that private employers are willing to hire older workers with higher medical and insurance costs. Moreover there are general perception in Singapore that most of the older workers are less productive, unable to learn new skills and not willing to change and adapt. Government bodies and their related organizations should set example of willing to hire older local workers instead of putting age limit in their employment requirements.
Basing on my experience and recent observation, age plays very important part in getting hired, public and private organizations alike. Some of my friends around my age and I always feel that employers in Singapore consider those above 50 years old morons and those above 60 years old handicaps. Now-a-day It is difficult to find employment advertisements of credible positions without age limit in Singapore.
Age discrimination is common in Singapore and unless the government is willing to lead the change, with or without retirement age limit makes no different to older employees like me. We will remain morons and handicaps at the mercy of employers on hiring and firing.
amd007 on July 29, 2010 at 1:47 am
Respect to MM Lee for what he has achieved for Singapore up to todate, no doubt about that. However so, there are many factors to consider before suggesting that, there should be no retirement age for Singapore. I don’t really get what exact suggestion was, is it no retirement age for Singapore or Singaporean. If the MM means, no retirement age for Singapore it would be okay, because Singapore will forever will be now and forever. But if he means Singaporean, it must be human beings, then it is a different ball game entirely. For all the opinions MM has discussed on Wednesday dialog session, necessarily he has not produce the best of solutions to the idea. In fact all the ideas are unnecessary. 1) To work forever does not determine you will be healthy forever. There are other one million other ways to keep you healthy. I don’t have to say it. It is common sense. Otherwise, only your pocket will be healthy, if that is so?. 2) You don’t have to work forever to be productive. There are other ways to do it also. I don’t have to say it also. It’s common sense. Any Tom, Dick and Harry know it. 3) Working with less pay and for a younger boss. It has already happening nothing new, no need to waste time and discuss it in any seminars, waste of time and money. Singaporeans accepted it for 15 years or so already. 4) The Fts will give us the dynamism, the powerful engine and carry us forward faster to the future. Also there is one million other ways to do it without them. I don’t need to say it. Also common sense. Example, where were they when Singapore was fighting against the Japanese and fighting for our independence?. We moved forward din’t we?. Our own Lieutenant Adnan and his battalion was there as the fighting engine right?, not the Fts mind you, Dynamic aren’t they?. Then MM and his cabinet team built up Singapore from scratch to a Multi Mega Tech country, dynamic aren’t they?, we moved forward din’t we?. Alamak!! sadly to say in 2010 suddenlyrs our leaders lost their focus, path and vision, it becomes vagues and blurry, they became weak and dependent on foreigners who just come here attracted to the opportunities offered. We can’t blame them because our leaders offered them, right?. Like the ants attracted wherever there is sugar. How could they give us dynamism and the engine when they do not have loyalty to Singapore. Will they fight like a Singapore born if the Japanese attack Singapore again?, I doubt it?. But I guarantee any Singaporean will fight to their last drip of blood for Singapore and for free, because they have serve the country in National service for two and a half years, and they are not offered anything to attract them. But they have the dynamism, engine and vision to carry Singapore forward to the future anytime, just like what the old Guards has shown and prove. Merdeka Singapura!!!!. hoy!!!!

I think the decision should be left up to the individual. Some may wish to continue working and some may not. The million dollar question is…when does CPF payout kick in. Will it be further deferred since there is no retirement age now? Will it be pushed for to, let’s say, when one reaches 72 or 75 years old? It’s only fair that it should kick in at 62 years old, regardless of whether the individual chooses to continue working or not. Question…who really wants to work, at such an age, for much less pay? Have better things to do right? And at the the rate things are going, it’s not even plausible that there will be enough room to keep our seniors on payroll. People, productively slows down as one ages. It’s a fact of life. No shame in that. It’s a natural progression for all of us. If you were the boss, would you hire a younger citizen or even a foreign worker over a senior citizen, even if it’s at a slightly lower wage? Very likely. I am not talking about top brass. It’s the entry level to middle management that I am most concerned of. In the meantime, CPF payout could be amended to 72 or 75. That would leave a lot of citizens up shit creek without a paddle. The “workerbees” of our nation have worked hard and paid their dues. Please give them, us, a break and permit us to rest and kick back, anyway we choose. Thank you.

He is right about this. The engine and system created is to sustain the economy. The olds will have to ” eat your self” given the experiences we have aged. Be out of the system and relook for opportunities. You protect yourselves the system will protect the youngs.Cruel but real…

He is just being nice and worded his speech nicely. On the hind side , i believe this day will come cos we are no longer so knowledged based as many developing countries are catching up… workers will have to think like businessmens to make a living .. like china, indonesia and india. What you know that these people dont these days. they are more hungry for our piece of cake and this comfort that we are enjoying. In this world , someone loss its your gain.. and when they gained , you lose.

It’s a choice not an obligation, peepz. People who wish to retire may do so. And those who wish to work… will be offered re-employment by their respective employers. So, what’s the big fuss? It’s not as if he force us to work … he’s giving a choice.

Duh, what is our old man talking about this time? Want to retire or not leave it to the people, who is he to speak for them all? And no wonder he create this mess for Singaporeans such that all are stuck in this viscious cycle where general citizens cannot survive without work even at old age. Hey if according to what he say is true, then please stop all CPF. ALL CPF should be return to ALL Singaporeans now, as there’s no need for any retirement funds! What’s the ultimate goal of CPF in the very first place? Another disappointing speech. Can some one more humane takeover please? Just vote the ever self-justifying clowns out, and don’t forget to resume estate duty! Make sure every single cent is traced!

The issue of “Retirement Age” and “CPF” in this context, is more likely to be connected than not. If not now, definitely in the foreseeable future. I will probably not be alive to see the light of that day, but nevertheless, I am concerned for the “workerbees” of our nation.

Hey Look! Without our MM Lee ,Singaporean will be smoking opium in the den, people will get raped by British and staying in attap houses. This is Truth.
He is just like Ghandi ,Father of India who fought for independent for India from the British without any fight, though he make a mistake by giving Pakistan to Mr.Nerhul.Look at Indonesia under the Dutch for 150 years and all their wealth is siphoned away and till now they are not able to be economical sound with lot of demons in the street of jakrta and other provinces and so on.Look at Philippines, same with Indonesia plight ,for all we know the Flippino workers have to work oversea in order to make survival for their family, and here we are scolding our Father who did us a great job.Let him have the benefit whatever for we do not want others countries to dominate us.We are just a city cosmopolitan and we are cursing our Singapore Father which is not right at all.Without him our father will be smoking in the opium dens and do you think we can lives so comfortable in Singapore? I doubt so.
As you know Singaporean is an aging population, once you reached a certain ages about 40-55 year old ,we find our self redundant in seeking for job etc, well we should use our brain in creating in doing some form of business with individual or with a group that have similar experiences,Form a company and be your own boss if you are unable to do strenuous job, sell something ,open a small cafe and so on.We must be creative in this era in order to survive.I think what MM lee said is absolute right,we cannot retired, the reasons are once you retired u become senile and many sickness will follows. We must always see the helicopter views and not the thunder view in order to make our life much easier.MM Lee is a man we Singaporean should respect just Like Ghandi from India who give freedom to his fellow men.He is the same like Ghandi.Trust me.

I felt that SMM had spoken from his heart, considering his ability and present position.
He is giving encouragement and confidence to all older workers and if you are healthy and willing, there will be employment.
However the government has to set the grounds right.
Lots of workers with years of ground experience, really have the chance to gain better positions these days.
Sadly the management and people at the top rarely walk the grounds to discover the talents they have within their organisation or home.
The government is funding dollars to upgrade skills to enhance our future for the better and that is good.
However, it has to be justified and fairly awarded to an individual being foreign or local.
We got to discover our local talents first before seeking elsewhere.
Good workers should be rewarded for their contributions and that is how the government can help Singaporeans.
I feel strongly that the people and the government are divided now because the dont walk the grounds to know its own people and their dificulties.
I struggled thru life at 14yrs of age here as both my parents were unemployed.
My father used to work under a British Subject till the British pulled out, and he was later given PR.
He was not able to find a government job till he died age 63.
There wasnt any assistance then from the Singapore government then.
My brother and sisters had to stop schooling and my mom a Singaporean had to make ends meet to provide meals, rental and necessary comfort.
I hope this past experience of mine will not be faced by all Singaporeans and wish the government will do its best as the situation is not good for most of us.
I am very sure with a good heart with compasion, our leaders can make our lives better and work as one people and as a nation with a greater spirit as before.

“There should be no retirement age for Singapore” This is the Golden Word–金玉良言–for every body not only Singaporean, Human body is like a vehicle’s engine, it needs to move on and move on running and running every day so that it’s mechanical parts wouldn’t get rusty and battery wouldn’t go flatted . Similarly, our body also need exercise and movement every day to maintain the momentum of the organs so that their deteriorating period would be longer and we would be healthier.

Just base on a hypothetical case of “no retirement age. is this possible?” and nothing to do as to who make that statement. Now…
There are many ways a company can make you leave at the age of 62 or earlier. No need to say more here. Now at that age, do you have a plan in place for companies to hire PMET even at the age of 50s? What incentives for them to hire these people? If no plans, how can you expect older people to be stay employed and therefore no retirement? The 2012 rule is to retain older people, not to hire those who have lost their jobs and still waiting. Putting up a cheap adv on tv to hire older people is not going to get anywhere. The main problem is NOT staying through 62 but getting hired once you leave the company at an old age. What’s other implications of this hypothetical case? Does that mean now we cannot even get our CPF at 62 and maybe only at 85? why do you want so much money when you are at that age when most cannot even walk properly. would that be insane or impractical?
Take another hypothetical case of “slow population growth, what to do?”. Why not make a more bold assumption that in order to increase the population (instead of having FTs – they marry much to locals anyway), why not legalized man having more than one wife and children? Both in singapore and overseas as long as they can be looked after but this is again the man’s decision. Incentives can also be given to the second or third child by the second or third wife? Think for the people of singapore (those who lives here) not just singapore as an economy.
my 2 cents worth.
99fire on July 29, 2010 at 8:16 am
The message is very clear, the government is looking for a reason to LOCK your CPF money & you can’t draw all the money when you are 55 or they will increase the minimum sum till you can draw only 5k. So, basically, when you are born in Singapore, you will not enjoy your life after a age that you think you are comfortable to retire & enjoy life as you wish. You need to work till you die & the money hold by the government for their use. I am sure this is be done after the next election. For those who are already in the top lead of the economic, everyday is also their retiremnt as their work is to ask people to work. So, it don’t affect them. All, please think carefully before your vote in the next election. A strong message must sent to them that don’t ever touch on your hard earn money after 55 years.

for ppl who are used to toil the land, if they stop work suddenly, many health problems will surface and soon they will be bed-ridden. If @65 and I still feel the energy within and I have saved up a golden egg, I’ll just get a low working hour/part-time job just to pass some time. CPF-wise, retirement age is still 65, maybe higher in the coming years.
I really hope all organisations will stop inviting our MM for such discussions/interviews lest someone ask some stupid questions and our MM gives some unpalatable answers.
laoban128 on July 29, 2010 at 8:40 am
I guess there are reasons both speak on the same day. One on wages restraint and the other no retirement age. Companies cant get workers in Singapore and didnt want to raise their pay.
If we are sincere on removing retirement age, they should consider
1. Remove all prejudices against old age in CPF contributions. No lesser contribution to employees who are older.
2. Pass legislation that for every 5 foreigners employed by a company, one Singaporean senior above 55 has to be employed.
3. Employer who removes an older employee, pay a lump sum to the employee depending on his period of service. The shorter the service the higher the amount. Base on MM’s age to calculate this amount, i.e. if the company employs u till MMs age, employers dont have to pay a cent. This lump sum should name after MM as LKY lumpsum payout.
4. Govt related comapnies start the ball rolling by putting up ads to employ older people only with ‘specials’. Lure these people back to the market and I am sure they are a better bunch than the foreign talents which some comapnies trying to engage.
This is likely to be welcome by all Singaporeans. Its time to face the facts that there many old age people in Sg and the proportion of old age Singaporeans to total population is getting higher and the no of unemployed old age people are increasing.

Singapore would never had this problem of retirement age. Actually there is a problem at this and old though experience and fit often find themselves unwanted at places of work. I have often wondered what may be the difference between the normal citizes as opposed to the Ministers, who when they get old become wiser and mentors. Finally to satisfy myself I just make belief that they an elite bunch of people (not something I agree but simply as an excuse). It was the same lot of elite people who started this whole issue. Some years back this so called Elite group of people kept on reminding the older people that they will find themselves out of jobs if they did not upgrade or move along with the changes. To me I am also one who was and is effected by the so called senior age. I have been in the workforce for well over 30 years and in all my years, as far as I am concerned I was better than most of my junior staff. I always wanted to be the best, never bothered about taking leave, medicals and I always too full charge of my responsibilities. I was always ready to take responsibility for what ever my juniors did and so on. However, at by about 50 I already felt the pressure and companies indicating that we should give way for the young.
Why this was so. It was because as the leaders made the remark that the old should be careful and not be contended as they can be replaced by younger people. You are the same people who gave the employers the reason to remove the older, reduce pay and employ younger inexperienced staff. The results were obvious, service went down the drain and employers had to import younger staff again the courtesy of the Government that foreign talent is the way out. You have really disregarded the hard efforts of the older citizens and made us feel that we were there just to mark time.
Now, I do not know why you make this remark that, there should be no retirement age for Singapore. I think this remark was long over due and you have said both that older people may be replace and now that there should not be a retirement age. In fact when you said older people beware you may be replaced you never saw yourselves as ageing people too. So for the Elite when they grow old they become wiser but to us the common citizens who contirbuted to your being in power, the progress of Singapore and placing Singapore as the best in many ways except, best in floods.
I have tried repeatedly to get back into the workforce and although I have maintained my health and do not look my age, on several occassions I have been to no less than four or five interviews but the moment the age question pops, I never ever hear from the prospective employer anymore. This is a fact and it is no way fabricated.
As an older Singaporean I feel that everytime the Government makes a statement, it is accepted by most employers and you will see the changes almost immediately just as is the case of age and older workers. I dont think there was ever a need to prompt employers that older workers need retraining etc., we are sensible enough to understand our capabilities and make changes even without being told to do so. In the 70′s my dad retired at the age of 65 but the company where he worked had to replace him with 3 young graduates and yet they invited him to come back to work and teach these young graduates. Eventually he worked actively till the age of 70. I know there may be many out there who would have similar stories to tell and there are many who like me, old but fit enough and with a wealth of experience and attitudes, loosing only because of the mind set of employers.
I think as responsible Ministers and people who are in power because of many of us, you should in future be more sensitive when making and remarks at all. Remarks made may be impossible to retrieve.

Nobody is blaming anybody. This is a corner Singaporean and foreigners giving all sides of views and comments. All ideas are welcome be it pros and cons. In our comment we should not accuse others as blaming somebody or another party. We should respect all point of views, to remain professional. We should treat all comments as non-prejudicial, because everybody has the right to state any comment as long as it’s not a personal character attack of sort. Definitely we will come across views which oppose our. It’s natural and understandable. But please do not throw accusation around, it’s not professional. All commentaries good or bad is actually will in the end contribute to a well balance decision reproduction as I believe so. I will personally respect all those who have given their views and comments in this corner because it makes the world go round. It’s actually very healthy. We should keep a positive view on this. Best of luck. keep the ball rolling. ahoy!!!!.

Great! Great! MM is talking about his new idea. Things will move fast & get implemented in a second.
I hope MM will ride/drive on the road without tp escort and start asking his PA “what is the commercial vehicles doing in the centre & extreme right lanes?” “why has overtaking become on the left?” or “we have to accept psychological switch on keep right unless overtaking. now turn the arrows”?.

Sad to see that in Singapore we have to Work And Work so that we can Pay And Pay.
Life is cheap in Singapore. Suicide rate is getting up every year. Our Singapore is tackling the wrong issues. How to expect Singapore to prosper?

Working as long as u can work is nothing wrong but…
+
Just to share what u might not be aware of. If u look yourself on the mirror, what do u see? Or, perhaps u may try looking at other people faces on MRT train?
+
Well, somehow & someway, virtually, u can see a chinese character:”苦”(means suffering) reflected on each & every individual face. It is simply made up of a pair of eyes represented by “十十”, a nose represented by “十” & a mouth “口”.
+
Terrific, a picture tells a thousand words, it means all human beings on earth are suffering? …Well you might choose or feign to be ignorant. But look, living in the world plagued by GREED, FEAR, STRESS, etc., & this is what we’ve already shown…
+
Whether you are rich, poor, young or old , in any affluent or poor boundary, all of us have to go through birth, sickness, ageing & death process. Next, follow by another life & death cycle & so on…And this is what Buddha meant by suffering because these are things beyond our control.
+
We are all “苦中作乐”(means having fun in the midst of suffering), striving & enjoying individualistic status, power & material gains without knowing these toxic “by-products” are harmful to our young & innocent generation who are exposed to moral deterioration & our earth which is suffering from climate change due to Global warming.
+
“苦中作乐”, to some may be the temporary “morphine” but any best antidote to date?
+
Love oneself first & love others as well as mother nature from now on…

Uncle Lee pls think before you open your mouth,
Check your memory,
All you know is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$,
Your pay into millions,
You go out sightseeing fully escorted,
Eat Sleep in peace.
You surely no need to retire man.
Layman on the street say DIE ALSO DON’T WANT TO LET GO.
Check out the records of all hiring agency what they promise their so call customers WE GET YOU THE BEST THE CHEAPEST BUT NOT OLD AND SHAGGY.
They forget that they will one day walk the same path of ageing,
Have you make a rule to must employ the 45 and above and pay them human salary, to stay on employed
(even fast food chain uncle and aunty is a thing of the past)
Common man needs 3 meal, a house to live in,
Sir you have lost all that human touch. (Cold,Lost, No more sense)
You shld come out to see the real singapore without escort, take a bus, take MRT, Cycle on the road, Go to the wet market, Que up for your food.

If I were getting the massive payola that the Minister Meddler is, with comparable “authority” matched to a total lack of accountability, why wouldn’t I keep “working” until a year or six after my body turns to dust?
Of course, in some people’s cases, that dust transformation occurs from the inside-top out and down.
samuel49 on July 29, 2010 at 9:35 am
Majority of people when retire at age 62 – got no money in thrir CPF becos they are still paying the mortgages for the flats/houses (as flats/houses bought at high price);
thats why MM Lee suggest those old people who still owe $$$ to con’t to work until they die just to pay and pay.
So u work and work and work and work and u die at work place…haha
