Worker’s Party member: Why more young graduates are joining the opposition
Opposition member Gerald Giam, 33, says more young, educated Singaporeans are joining the opposition because they want to see real change from the top.
Once a Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Giam is now one of the 13 council members elected to the Central Executive Committee of the Workers’ Party.
Giam — who is now a senior IT consultant — is part of a new breed of university graduates who have joined the opposition and want to make a difference.
“What I realised is that if you want to see real change in Singapore, it has to be from the top. I joined the WP because I felt I could contribute towards this and do my part for Singapore,” the Bachelor of Science graduate from the University of Southern California told Yahoo! Singapore.
But why the opposition and not the ruling People’s Action Party?
“It was a process, getting to know people at WP, understanding their beliefs and values and when I interacted with them over two years, a lot of them were honest, intelligent and sincere people who placed the interest of Singaporeans ahead of themselves. I felt this is as a good team of people to work with to bring a better Singapore,” said the married father of a little girl.
During his one and a half years in the MFA, Giam said his duties involved analysing political and economic reports and providing policy advice on developments concerning Singapore’s strategic interests.
“It wasn’t at MFA that I decided to join the opposition,” he explained. “I had a good experience at the MFA and it allowed me to observe how the government worked at the highest level,” he added.
He shares why he made the leap into politics and why more educated young women and men are joining him.
Look out for the full interview with Gerald Giam and find out if he will be contesting in the next general election on Yahoo! SingaporeScene this Friday.

Well while I do come through the transistional period from X generation then to Y generation and now Z generation, Overall I think society have changed as it progress over the period of time, gone will the days when people are living in poverty and the need to rely more on the government to step up assistance and aids.
Today is a different paradigm altogether. People are more educated, more knowledgable, information are easy accessible. People believe in there ia a need to change and not ‘YES’man type. If you argue with you facts and take the stance I believe they do have their contribution too.
However if everything is on the flip by exercising political power to keep them at bay then I think improvement to the life of the Singaporean will be slow.
While I do not disagree that the ruling party is not performing, I think they have to see, feel and touch the ground instead of leaving everything to the grassroot leaders.
Strictly my opinion and does not constitue to siding any party

It is a good sign of maturity. Singaporeans know that unless there is a check the situation in Singapore will not always be rosy. The voice of the people is not always heard right so if there is credible opposition it would be better than having to voice out problems to the ruling party’s MPs. The fact that they are in the same team already pose problems.

I am happy to see you stand up for your beliefs and try to make a change for the better for us all. I only feel sorry that in 2 or 3 years time you’ll either be in jail, sued for bankruptcy and made to look like a criminal for your beliefs when you are not. Real change will never come for us alas… maybe in 5 to 10 years time (hopefully sooner) when nature takes it’s course, a grey era will end and a new and (hopefully) better beginning may arise. I hope you’ll still be standing when that glorious time comes and do your bit to forge a better future for us all.

For me I personally am interested in joining politics in the future. Currently I am getting my A Levels and preparing to take a degree in History or International Relations. The I think I would want to also land a job at MFA. However , should I want to join politics I feel that I will not want to join the opposition. It’s not because PAP always wins every single election and I hate to lose. Rather, I feel that in a sense opposition parties need some help from inside the PAP in order to make a bigger impact on Singapore’s political stage. My dream and ambition of going into PAP is to encourage and make the PAP give more attention to opposition parties in daily life and not just in election years. I would personally feel that the PAP isn’t all about being a “yes” party. All it needs is some new blood and some radical and daring thinking from its Youth Wing to be more proactive in the party instead of only relying on party old guards. We need a bipartisan political scene like the US does with the Republicans and the Democrats, but of course without the split we now see. Because Singapore cannot afford to be a one-party system for her own survival. Should PAP fail somehow or other we would need a strong and capable opposition to take over and ensure that life can go on even without the PAP. Else the country might risk collapse due to an un-united core. Hopefully my ambitions can become reality like all these graduates, and i would look forward to working with them PAP or opposition in securing our country’s future.
Nelsonwmj on July 14, 2010 at 8:18 pm
@SingaporeDoc: real change will have to come from within the PAP itself. From people in the party that believe in true responsible democracy which means an equal voice to oppositions. I am of a mind to push the PAP to be more open to the opposition and give more focus to them. Wish me well in starting this reform should I get the chance!

I think we should let some other strong parties to try taking over PAP’s place for a short while and see how they fare. After all, PAP is not the perfect political party and we should let other parties try to outdo PAP, for the best of Singaporeans, to choose the best political party to lead spore!

PAP will nv lose control of the gov, at least not in the near future. This is why we need opposition parties to keep them in check! Who is there to provide an alternative take on issues? Who is there to push for transparency and audit the statistics and post challenging questions? For those who think that PAP is doing a good job, please at least have an open mind and not trash the opposition. Having an opposition party in the parliament will only benefit singapore!
Gerald chiam! i salute u for your ideals and courage!

Hello Wake up la!!. Do you think the 15% growth is real? IT IS PRE_ELECTION PROPAGANDA!!!
What was the baseline used? What is the growth breakdown sector by sector?
If they compared to last year growth which was NEGATIVE, Ofcourse la the growth this year will be high.
Like for example, last year my salary of $1000 was cut by 50% to become $500. So this year, my boss increase my salary to $1100. So does it mean that my actually salary increase by 120% ???

The ground level is straight forward. If any opposition that’s unable to field candidates for all consituency in any election, its deem unfit to over throw the ruling party. What can 2 opposition in parliment do ? What have they done? Twenty five years down the road Mr. Chaim still ‘one man show ‘. You must file candidates for all consituency and have a ‘shadow’ govt. in waiting. Once this is achieve, than the opposition can give S’porean the choice as alternative govt. At least got a fighing chance. Election after election Mr. Chiam and Mr.Low Kah Tiang rally & rally like sure win. Final result : 2 opposition MP. Its non event!!!!!!!!!

Everybody don’t talk so much. Lets support this guy and vote him in. 15% growth, so what ! Only the ministers’ salary will be increased. You got no share. when u join the PAP, it will end up like the saying, “when in Rome, DO as the Romans Do;” Do u think your voice will NOT be drown out by the majority ? If you persists, I am sure you will end up in a corner somewhere; please don’t dream…

21 century shld see the irrelevant of the political system, where politician are replaced by economist who understand how to raise the standard of living of the people and ensuring job for the young and taking care of the elders.Look at the cock up political system today in Europe, America and Japan creating budget deficit and unemployment and corrupted politician of developing nations creating misery for the people.
It’s time to sack all the politicians for the benefit of the people.
