Netizens outraged by teen assault in lift
A video of an enraged youth repeatedly slapping and hitting his female schoolmate in an HDB lift has sparked a wave of outrage from Singapore netizens.
Taken inside the lift, the video, that has been posted on STOMP, shows the male student repeatedly slapping the girl and slamming her head against the lift walls. The conversation in the video reveals that the girl was being accused of ratting on him to the teacher, which she denied.
The attack lasted more than a minute and was filmed by another female student.
Judging from the students’ uniform, comments on online forums suggest they are from Siglap Secondary School. The school’s principal Low Joo Hong confirmed this to The New Paper. Strangely enough, tough, in photos from the assaulter’s blog, it seems both schoolmates are close friends.
And yet, this incident of school violence is not the first of its kind in Singapore or elsewhere.
In January this year, a video of a bullied Malaysian teen made its rounds on the Web.
The video, taken at the stairwell of a shopping mall in Selangor, shows one of the girls slapping the student before others take turns to punch and kick her. The attackers continued to taunt her even as she got down on her knees and pleaded with them to stop.
Last October, a video clip titled “Shanghai Girl beaten” was also widely circulated online. The clip, shot with a mobile phone camera, lasted five minutes and shows a female attacker furiously kicking another girl in the waist and belly as well as slapping her in the face.
Angry netizens retaliated by publishing the attacker’s personal information online and even launched a mass protest demanding justice for her violent behaviour.
Teen violence in schools is not just a problem that plagues Singapore but is increasingly a global concern. The recent suicide of Temasek Polytechnic student Melissa Toh also brings to mind the many problems young teens face.
Do you know what your kids are up to these days and should parents step up to take more responsibility?
What should be done to punish those guilty of teen violence and how can a repeat of such violence be avoided among youths?

They should be given heavy punishment and warnings, to prevent future bullies from behaving such way. No one has the right to be treated as such.
Vennes on May 12, 2010 at 1:26 pm
I think for abusive kids like them should be punished to do volunteer work for a year based on hours. The culprits must be called before media for questioning. I hope there will be programs like Opera show focus on teenage health to help our kids.

I personally think as a student that we are INDEED facing a lot of things which I dont think really was much of an issue in the past. Now there is suicide.drugs.bullying.CYBERbullying and stuff like that. If the present is like this, what of the future?

This bloody buffoon should be sent to a hard-core prison and be caned. And the society must know this is a cheap way of portraying Singapore as a society of sick individuals who apparently got away with that if no one got him apprehended. He is identifiable. And those who recorded the video should also be taken to task. The bystanders outside the lift, if they knew about it…should also have done something. I sincerely hope even the Senior Leaders of PAP seen this and do something about. Our system is appearing ineffective and falling apart. Wonder what Singapore look like in 5 years time?? More lift assaults and getting away? Do any one of you like this and accept this?

Kids are learning from media/internet/dramas/movies etc…. If you have kids, do guide them the right way from young…. Parents in this part of the world are unware of what their kids are capable of…

At least the ‘bully teen’ must get a proper ‘punishment’ in order to avoid him from repeating himself from doing further violence in future. The school must take some action or the authorities please do something.

Girls nowaday should learn martial art such as Wing Chun not only for health purpose but also for self-defence.
It is better to learn Wing Chun to prevent than learn Wing Chun after being hurt.
Why Wing Chun Martial Art for Girls?
Easy to learn and proven its effectiveness to overcome Big Size ot Force. Such Gongfu is created by a Nun and learned by many actors such as Bruce Lee, Ip Man and etc

Given that there is a video to show the violence,
Singapore Police should investigate and take appropriate action against
those responsible.

Danial on May 12, 2010 at 1:36 pm
In my opinion, the parents of the girl should bring this case up to court or even just report to the police. I’m very sure, if this case is taken up to court, the boy must be jailed.

I am not a Singaporean, but i beg people to please do something about this. The video exposes the guy….but also plants the girls face over the Web. If this is just taken for granted yet another time, then there is no justice in this world. I personally want to slap this guy till my hands go numb…an eye for an eye.

Behaviour mending programs should be arranged for such individuals in a place like changi prison to and the ISD should be focused on such individuals as threats to society and hopefully kept in detention without trial till they show signs of that they are rehabilitated.

School principal only care about the result, They should focus more on the student behaviour. The teen violence in schools is increasing. Not just the parent should take more responsibility the school should be put in respponsibility also.

This is Horrible. I call upon the authorities (police) to take action immediately. I hope the authorities would not wait for a police complain to be lodged before they act.
The Ministry of Education and MCYS must work towards ending teen violence. They must come with some kind of education program.
Thanks

I think it is safe to assume that there is either an underlying motive or stupidity in allowing the male to assault her while being filmed by a “friend” who did not intervene.

Though Im not a parent but my heart goes out to the parents of the victim. No one deserve such a treatment. The guy has no rights to lay his hands on her , as mentioned in the comment before me, I strongly urge the guy / gay to be severally punished….shamed and have his picture and the process of him being caned/slapped published for the whole country , youtube whatever to warn future bullies of such behaviors.
At times there are measures to be taken into hand to educate ppl like such and love isnt one of it, it only cones after the punishment he deserve. What a pussy!!!

More stringent discipline should be imposed in schools.
mark prindle on May 12, 2010 at 1:43 pm
This type of behavior will only escalate when they become adults. If the school system and legal system are not addressing the “bully mentality”, coupled with the high presure school system, its just a matter of time before some young person whom feels picked on and suffering from low self asteem acts out against themselves or others. Wake up adults, you have laws prohibiting certain gum chewing behaviour, what about physical or mental brutality propagated against the youth?

Have to study the intention and background of the guy for doing so. there must be some reason or misguidance of such violence.
In my personal opinion otherwise, hmm… gentlemen/boys should not harm ladies/girls. Big wrong big time that is
Annie Cleopatra on May 12, 2010 at 1:44 pm
This is common in many schools especially post secondary schools. Some students of ITE College West (Clementi Campus) are often bias or treat unevenly by peers. Seem that the bullies are capable to take advantage on those who will cry and keep quiet of all mishap events on them. Has MOE being more stringent on the rules on students and have close-circuit device installed in all corners and even washroom of all school, the weaker in strength and power students may have a better environment to study. “Targets” of bullies are not even protected by school instructor though, am I right that the instructor are half-eye closed or had all their eyes closed, as instructors job are to teach and educate the students and not as discipline masters or mistresses. MOE or ITE and all other schools, please do something before something beyond your imaginations occurs. Or we have to “see” a student attempt suicide or being beaten to death then actions will be taken?
Best regards,
Dr. Annie Cleopatra Leo

Bullying has always been a challenging issues that we have to face. By giving the children an education on how problems can be resolved in a mature way and also providing an avenue for them to be heard by the relevant people, be it in schools (teachers etc.) will help to curb bullies. On top of that, schools should provide counselling ways of resolving issues rather than the old-age punishment. Educating the bystanders will also help to prevent bullies. Many bullies can be prevented by pacification of bystanders and setting a standard that bullying is totally unnecessary, inappopriate and childish in resolving issues. Whatever steps that we undertake, we must bear in mind that roles are interchanging. A bully may inturn become a bullied and vise versa. Hence, this is an issue which we need to handle very objectively rather than personally.

Any deliberate assault others should be punishable by jail terms and caning; not forgetting community services as well as counselling. That applies to underage (for they seem to think that just because they are underage or girls, they will escape punishment).

First of all – this is a fight between friends. The girl appears to be taking those blows either under a guilty feeling or that they are close enough to understand what is happening.
From a third person perspective – all these fights seem disgusting but we need to understand the reasons behind these actions.
The problem with netizens is everyone has a free internet account that they just go about saying the guy has to be hanged and the girl has to be punished….

There is nothing special in any society. It is happening all the time around the world, whether developed or otherwise.
These happened when I was growing up and it will happen again and again and again. I am concerned but I am not surprised or alarmed by such acts. The “victim” should exercise her rights.
It so happened that this particular one is caught on video and circulated on the internet, otherwise it would be forgotten just like many other similar or worse episodes.

What have been wrong all together must not be seen it lightly. Bullies ought to be taken to task, family members ought to be informed, like wise suspension and punishment ought to be carry out from school as well as the Authority in order that bullies will not get away too lightly. The victim should undergo counselling session together with parent. Likewise the bullies after serving his term should go thru counselling with parent also and make to untake good behavoiur for a duration of term e.g. 3 years.

Two course of action for the victim: civil and possible criminal action.
Criminal: lodge a complaint with the police, and they will take it from there. Not guaranteed that any punishment will be meted out as it lies at the discretion of the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Civil: filea civil suit against the boy, suing him for general and special damages for the physical, mental and pscyhological hurt suffered by the victim. The suit would probably be one of assault and battery (in tort).
Sue the fella so that he will always remember what he has done. But after that, the victim, and society, must learn to forgive him (if he is truly repentant).

Very sad, is time for all parents to wake-up. Today working parents have no time for their children, this is what they end up with. Teens are over pampered by their parent, when teacher are strict, NS officer are strict, they launch compliant against them. No one would want to lose their job, so they try their very best to be nice. But, who will suffer in the future? Our younger generation will suffer, because they are yet to see the real world…….

I think kids like this should be severely disciplined. Having said that, I wonder what the standard of severe in contemporary society entails. While the kids are definitely to be blamed for exhibiting such behaviour, parents play a part too. Parents nowadays are way too ‘soft’ on their children, giving them exactly what they want and not being able to ‘control’ their children. Comparing the difference in societal standards of today and in the past, I personally think it disgusting that we have allowed such a degradation to occur. As I remember, it was not too long ago that through the use of proper discipline and tools such as the good old cane, the children of yesteryear not only turned out fine but have positively impacted as instruments of the great country state of Singapore. Do not mistake my views that we need to start whipping our children. It must have been a few weeks back when there were reports of clashes on a rugby field by players a coaches from ‘elite’ schools. Our downfall is that, we take it upon ourselves to adopt the practices of westerners and we’ve become softer than soft. Are kids of today that out of line? YES. Are parents partly to be blamed? YES! Should something be done about it? A big fat YES!! In a country where customs can essentially be described as east meets west, the onus lies on the parents of children to impart unto them the strict and balanced upbringing of eastern culture while at the same time promote the liberal views of learning and self-improvement of western culture. The key is balance.
I personally believe that if the situation calls for it, dishing out appropriate punishments is a must. I await the ‘constructive’ criticisms of those who would argue against what I have said, but before that, just stop and think, will it, in the long-run benefit our country should we allow a lack of discipline to materialise? Reminisce and picture, where we were before, where we are now, how we got here and what is to come if we allow this to continue.

From my understanding, the school did warned the students – but no punishment given. When pressed for assurance of safety, they were told that as lomg as they are in school, its safe but no guanrantee once outside school. They are advise to make police report for outside school protection.

What gives?! Anyway this ah gua probably will have his retribution. One fine day after he gives his ass for money, the guy will just kick him away with no payment and worse he contracted some STDs! So typical ah gua!

The roots of bullying are lack of moral education and over-exposure of violent films which are easily accessible nowadays. It is high time that the society (not only school, but at all aspects) should focus on MORAL EDUCATION from young. While too much emphasis on money making is a unique way of survival in everywhere, moral education should not be left forgotton. While punishment is the must for this offence, it is also important to ensure the right message to be delivered to all from young.

Nowdays, with the high standard of living in Singapore, both parents work long hours to supplement the family income & repay that exhorbitant 30 year HDB flat loan and spend very little time with their children
